Mrs S J Blakemore
Foundation/Member Governor

I have been involved with QM for many years: firstly, on the P.F.A., then as a Parent Governor and now as a Foundation Governor.  I am the Link Governor for maths and numeracy.

abirch   06/02/2017 - 05/02/2021

Mrs A Birch
Foundation/Member Governor

I am a former student of Queen Mary’s High School and attended between 1996 and 2003. I am a registered midwife currently working as Senior Commissioning Manager for Maternity and Children’s services in the NHS. I began my NHS career in 2007 when I studied for a BSc Midwifery, before securing a first class honours degree in 2010 and then going on to study for a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health and a Masters in Leadership and Service Improvement.

I completed the ‘Get on Board’ programme in 2014 securing a certificate from the Association of Corporate Governance Practitioners and then went on to secure a place as Trustee/Director of a Women’s Charity in Birmingham.  I have had various roles in the NHS including midwifery, service management in Palliative Care, Emergency Department, General Paediatrics, Haematology and Oncology and commissioning in Primary Care. However, I have always remained passionate about maternity and children’s services, maintaining my professional registration, and am currently working as a commissioner for these services.

I am the link governor for Safeguarding, Special Educational Need and Disabilities and Looked After Children for the school.

    01/10/2013 - 30/09/2017

Mrs G Binder
Foundation/Member Governor

My name is Georgina Binder. For the last 3 years I have been a volunteer Foundation Governor and Chair of the Resources Committee here at Queen Mary’s High School. Professionally, I have a background in school financial management having worked in secondary schools, firstly in Birmingham and more latterly in Walsall, for the last ten years. Prior to this, I was employed by a Local Education Authority for four years and before this, spent numerous years working in the private sector. During my first 7 years working in school, I served as an elected Staff Governor and it was from this role that I’ve developed a desire to be significantly involved in school governance. As a result of my profession, I also actively assist schools in their work to ensure that children receive the best possible education particularly given the constrained financial environments in which schools operate. I also enjoy listening to individual or groups of pupils along with parents and carers about their individual experiences of school and education as a whole.

    10/03/2017 - 09/03/2021

Mr J Russon
Parent Governor

I am honoured to be parent governor at Queen Mary's. I wanted to get involved because I had been a Governor for over 4 years at my daughter's junior school. Being part of a governing body has given me a good understanding on how schools run and what support is needed for our children to grow and develop, ensuring we give them the best possible opportunities and experiences . I have been an Business Account Manager for over 20 years and I hope that my experience can prove useful as a member of the Governing body.

Mr B Adams
Staff Governor

This is my 5th Year as head of mathematics at Queen Mary’s High School I am also a Senior Leader of Teaching and Learning. I love the school and am deeply committed to seeing the students learn and develop in all areas.
Prior to my current post I worked as a Head of Year at Kingsmead Technology College in Hednesford.
I am a SLE (specialist leader of education) and enjoy helping schools in the local community develop their mathematics. I am proud of the Maths Hub that we run to challenge and raise aspirations of primary school students.
I have two young children and want the very best provision for my children. I understand that this is the right of every child and the aspiration of every parent. This drives me in both my role as Teacher, Head of Mathematics and Staff Governor.

    01/09/2015 - 30/08/2019

Mr K Whitehead
Staff Governor

I have had the pleasure of working and living at Queen Mary’s for over 20 years now in the capacity of caretaker / site manager, I am now on my second term as a staff governor and participate in the staff Murder Mystery plays which we put on in school once a year, it’s a great evening. I am also an active member of the Queen Mary's High School Association and I look forward to meeting you at one of our meetings.

    07/04/2014 - 06/04/2018

Mr S Martin
Co-opted Governor

I am married with three grown up sons, all of whom have attended local Primary and Secondary Schools.  Having wanted to get more involved with the school, I joined the Governing Body in 2014 as a Co-opted Governor.  Gaining an understanding of the Education system and the challenges schools are facing has been both informative and enlightening. I am a member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers with in excess of 20yrs experience in the Banking and Finance Sector. Professionally,  I work as a Commercial Director for a European Franchise Business with responsibility for the recruitment and development of our Franchise Network.  Working in a corporate environment, has been both challenging and informative, but it equips you with a whole range of transferable skills, ranging from managing and developing people, control and administering budgets, through to project management across IT, premises and acquisitions.

Dr A Bruton
Head Teacher

I took up my post as Head Teacher at Queen Mary’s High School in September 2009. From the moment I set foot in the school I knew that it would become a huge part of my life. I am grateful to have been given the privilege of leading such an outstanding educational institution with such an impressive tradition of achievement.

Further study has always been my passion and I graduated in 1999 with an MEd in Management and Policy Studies, studied on a part time basis with the University of Birmingham. After completing my NPQH I then decided to pursue an EdD in Leaders and Leadership in Education and graduated formally in July 2013.

In February 2015 I was designated as a National Leader of Education and have supported leadership development and school improvement both locally and in other areas of the country.

Mr C Underwood
Clerk to the Governors

I was appointed as the Clerk to the Queen Mary’s Foundation in 2003, which was a part-time position combined with my work as a solicitor in practice in Walsall.  The Foundation supports the High School, the Queen Mary’s Grammar School and Mayfield Preparatory School, and I am the Clerk to the Governors at each.  The work for the schools steadily increased, and in 2013 I decided to retire as a solicitor and work only for the Foundation and the schools.  My work is very varied – I deal with the administration of the Governing Body, attend meetings and prepare the papers, including the minutes. I also provide advice to the governors and to the Head Teachers. The hardest part is making sure I don’t show favouritism to one school above the others, or to make comparisons between the High and the Grammar Schools.  I am married to a retired Maths teacher, and have two grown up children – a son who is head of sixth form at a school in Wiltshire, and a daughter who is a lecturer in Engineering at a college in New Zealand.
