Science Year 10

Science stimulates and excites students’ curiosity about events and phenomena in the world around them.  It links direct practical experience with ideas and provides the knowledge to satisfy curiosity.  Through science, students can understand how major scientific ideas contribute to technological change, developments in industry, business and medicine and improving quality of life. Balanced Science is a compulsory core subject within the National Curriculum framework. All KS4 students undertake a minimum of two Science GCSEs from the Edexcel 360 Science portfolio, thus allowing them access to study any of the Sciences at Advanced level. There is also the option of choosing separate sciences from the option blocks.

Students following the route leading to two GCSEs will complete GCSE Science in Year 10 and GCSE Additional Science in Year 11. Each GCSE will be graded individually.  The academic content is balanced across all three subject areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics and students will be assessed in each of the three subject areas.

Students choosing separate sciences will complete three GCSEs – Biology,  Chemistry and Physics. Each GCSE is graded individually. This option allows students with a serious interest in the Sciences to experience a more in-depth study.

Route leading to two GCSEs

In Year 10, students will cover the following topics:

  • Biology – Environment; Genes; Electrical and Chemical Signals; Use, Misuse and Abuse.
  • Chemistry – Patterns in Properties; Making Changes; There’s one Earth; Designer Products.
  • Physics – Producing and Measuring Electricity; You’re in Charge; Now You See it, Now You Don’t; Space and its Mysteries.

Assessment is a mixture of external and internal assessment.

External assessment (60%)

Six multiple choice tiered tests throughout the year.

Internal assessment (40%), made up of:

Assessment activities which assess ‘How Science Works’ (30%)

Practical skills assessment (10%)

In Year 11, students will cover the following topics:

Biology – Inside Living Cells; Divide and Develop; Energy Flow; Interdependence.

Chemistry – Synthesis; In your element; Chemical Structures; How Fast? How Furious?

Physics – As Fast as You Can; Roller-Coasters and Relativity; Putting Radiation to Use; Power of the Atom.

Assessment is a mixture of external and internal assessment.

External assessment (up to 60%)

  • Multiple choice tiered tests.
  • Structured tiered examination

Internal assessment (minimum 40%), made up of:

Assessment activities which assess ‘How Science Works’ (30%)

Practical skills assessment (10%)

Route leading to three GCSEs

Students will complete all of the units of study listed for the route leading to two GCSEs plus additional units in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Additional Biology units – Biotechnology and Behaviour in Humans and Other Animals

Additional Chemistry units – Chemical Detection and Chemistry Working for Us

Additional Physics units – Particles in Action and Medical Physics.
