Modern Foreign Languages Year 10

As a Language College we aim to offer students in all Key Stages the opportunity to learn a wide range of languages and develop skills which are increasingly in demand in the workplace.

The courses aim to develop students' ability to use foreign languages in practical, everyday situations. The linguistic skills which students develop at GCSE prepare them, should they choose, for further study up to AS/A level in the Sixth Form.

There are regular opportunities to practise speaking skills with native speakers and to access a range of ICT resources through the Language College website and the new Digital Language Laboratory.

All students must study one language (throughout Key Stage 4) and are encouraged to study two from the following languages.

French     German     Japanese  Spanish

GCSE

The course is based on the following themes:

  1. Lifestyle
  2. Leisure
  3. Home and Environment
  4. Work and Education

If there is a viable group for Gujarati, Panjabi or Urdu they will be included in the option blocks and will be studied within curriculum time. Otherwise a range of Community Language lessons and qualifications are available at lunchtimes.

Board: French, German, Panjabi, Spanish and Urdu:  AQA

Japanese:        Edexcel

Gujarati:           OCR

All languages are assessed in four skills by final examination:

Speaking         30%                 Listening          20%

Reading           20%                 Writing             30%

Listening and reading are assessed as a final examination whilst speaking and writing take the form of 2 controlled assessments each.
