Mathematics Year 10

GCSE

At key stage 4, all students work towards the Edexcel linear qualification.

This encourages students to develop confidence in, and a positive attitude towards, mathematics and to recognise the importance of mathematics in their own lives and to society.

The course requires students to:

  • Develop knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts, including:
                 - Number
                 - Algebra
                 - Geometry
                 - Measures
                 - Statistics
                 - Probability
  • Use their knowledge and understanding to make connections between mathematical concepts.
  • Apply the functional elements of mathematics in everyday and real-life situations.

The course gives the students the opportunity to develop the ability to:

  • Acquire and use problem-solving strategies
  • Select and apply mathematical techniques and methods in mathematical, every day and real-world situations
  • Reason mathematically, make deductions and inferences and draw conclusions
  • Interpret and communicate mathematical information in a variety of forms appropriate to the information and context.

A wide range of resources are available to the students on Frog, the school VLE. These include:

  • Past papers and mark schemes
  • Questions by topic
  • Key notes and helpsheets
  • An electronic textbook for A/A* material

In addition, pupils can find useful material on the “MyMaths” website and a revision guide will be issued in year 11. Students should be equipped with a scientific calculator, a ruler, a protractor and a pair of compasses.

All of our students will sit the higher level examinations which are two one and three quarter hour papers.

Additional Mathematics

Half of the year group will also study this OCR free standing Mathematics qualification alongside GCSE. This will sharpen and extend their mathematical skills and knowledge and set strong foundations for further study in the sixth form. The content consists of four areas in Pure Mathematics

  • Algebra
  • Co-ordinate Geometry
  • Trigonometry
  • Calculus

Each of these is used to support a topic from a recognised branch of Applied Mathematics.

The assessment is by a single 2 hour examination, with grades A, B, C, D, E or U available. There is no coursework. Candidates are permitted to use a scientific or graphical calculator in the examination for this unit. As an Advanced Level FSMQ it carries UCAS points (grade A 20 points, grade B 17 points, grade C 13 points, grade D 10 points, grade E 7 points).

The criteria that will be used to set the students will be high performance in assessments and a strong work ethic. Students will be recommended for the sets by their current mathematics teacher.
