History Year 10
The GCSE History course tackles many of the important issues facing the contemporary world and encourages students to develop into thoughtful citizens with critical and balanced views on world events.Paper 1 (knowledge and understanding): 2 hours (45% of the final grade)
- International relations 1945 – 75 (including the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crisis)
- Nazi Germany (depth study)
Paper 2 (source analysis skills): 1 ½ hours (30% final grade)
- Britain 1906 – 18 (including the beginnings of the welfare state, the campaigns for votes for women and life on the Home Front in the First World War)
- South Africa after 1945 – 94 (one assignment on Nelson Mandela and the collapse of apartheid )
- Understand the world today in the context of past events
- Explain the actions and motivations of different groups of people and governments
- Evaluate evidence and use historical sources to understand the past and interpretations of the past
- Argue a case and draw conclusions
- Think critically and evaluate the causes and consequences of events which have shaped the modern world
- Make use of a variety of techniques to learn about the past, such as ICT, role play, decision making skills.
