Design and Technology Year 10

Our GCSE courses aim to further extend pupils knowledge and understanding of the material world through the design and manufacture of quality products.

There are three courses on offer, students wishing to study Design and Technology at GCSE level must choose one of the following courses:

  • Design & Technology:  Product Design (Resistant Materials)
  • Design & Technology:  Product Design (Textiles)
  • Design & Technology:  Textiles Technology

Controlled Assessment is a fundamental element of all of our courses and therefore it is important that pupils choosing to study Design and Technology have the ability to organise their own work and meet deadlines.

Design & Technology:  Product Design (Resistant Materials)

This course provides the flexibility for pupils to work with a variety of materials including paper, card, wood and plastic. It will suit you if you enjoy graphics and/or working with resistant materials.

The course is product focussed and has the following taught elements:

Design Methodology Materials & Components Industrial Manufacturing
Consumerism Human Factors Packaging and Labelling
Sustainability The use of ICT & CAD/CAM The History of Design

Year 10 consists of these taught elements and a series of mini projects in preparation for the Major Project which will be carried out in Year 11.  This is scheduled to take 45 hours to complete and is worth 60% of the final mark.  Pupils have some flexibility to choose their project based on their preferred material choice in line with themes set by the exam board.

This course will suit creative pupils who like a challenge.  As well as design and make skills, transferable skills such as project management, time management and working with others are key features of this course.

The details of this course are:

Board:                        AQA
Specification:              Design & Technology:  Product Design (4555)
Assessment:               Controlled Assessment 60%   Written Paper 40%
