Aims:
In Mathematics we aim to develop mathematical knowledge and problem solving skills in a way which encourages confidence and provides satisfaction and enjoyment.

Content:
In Year 8 we will finish level 7 and cover level 8 of the National
Curriculum. Most lessons will begin with a mental or oral starter as suggested in the National Numeracy Strategy.

Main topics include:

• Number - percentages, negative numbers.
• Algebra - simultaneous equations, index notation, straight line graphs
• Shape and space – Pythagoras, circles, transformations, locus and bearings.
• Data handling - quartiles and boxplots, scatter graphs, types of averages, and probability tree diagrams.

Assessment:

• Homework is given once each week and should take about forty minutes.
• A test will be set at the end of each of the first two terms. Girls will be entered for their maths SAT at the end of the year. Students will also take part in the Junior Maths challenge.
• Main assessment will be through the Key Stage 3 level 5-7SAT paper taken in May.
• At this point most of our students achieve a level 7.
• Maths Surgery will take place on 2 lunchtimes each week and will be open to all girls in years 7 - 9 who are experiencing difficulties or would like extra help with their classwork and/or homework.
